In the early 80’s a seemingly random collection of American and Hawaiian teenagers began congregating at a nondescript house on Hawaii’s north shore.
Back then, names like Rob Machado, Taylor Knox and Kelly Slater were largely unknown. Just small-time American surfers in a world dominated by Aussies. Few could have predicted that, along with with a handful of Hawaiians and the refined eye of filmmaker Taylor Steele, this crew would go on to change the course of professional surfing forever.
For their brand new documentary, directors Jeff and Michael Zimbalist were granted unprecedented access to dig deeper than any before them into the lives of these surfing icons. The result is a compelling exploration of the forces that moulded this group of teenagers, largely from broken homes, into the most influential surfers of all time.
Compiled using thousands of hours of never before seen footage from the team’s personal archives and dozens of hours of in-depth interviews, the film charts the group’s journey from humble beginnings, to the upper echelons of competitive surfing. Taking in the victories, the rivalries and the tragedies along the way. From tales of abusive mothers and alcoholic fathers, that high five at Pipe and the conspiracy theories that surround it and Kelly’s own battle with depression, the film provides extraordinary insight at every twist and turn.
The Momentum Generation is a must-see for any surf fan, offering up the rare chance to view our sporting heroes in a whole different light and we’re really pleased to be taking on tour around the country.
